MATH 240-3: Algebra I: Linear Algebra, Spring 2008. Lectures: MWF at 14:30-15:20 in AQ 3154. Instructor: Michael Monagan, E-mail: mmonagan@cecm.sfu.ca Office: Room K10501, Phone (778) 782-4279 Office hours: Tuesday 12-1pm, Friday 10-11am. Material: Chapter 1: Vectors, Matrices and Linear Systems, Chapter 2: Dimension, Rank and Linear Transformations, Chapter 3: Vector Spaces, Chapter 4: Determinants, Chapter 5: Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, and Chapter 6: Orthogonality I will include two applications (two lectures) from other sources, but otherwise will stick to the text. Grading: Seven assignments: 24% Midterm 1: 13% Wed Feb 6th, in class Midterm 2: 13% TBA Final examination: 50% Fri Apr 18th, 3:30-6:30pm Assignments Doing the 7 assignments is the main way you will learn the material. Most (more than 50%) of the questions on the final exam and the midterms will be taken from the assignments. Assignments will be handed out in class and posted on the course web page. Solutions are to be placed in the MATH 240 drop off boxes outside AQ 4135. The Algebra Workshop. We run a workshop (a lab) in room AQ 4135. You can work in the lab with other students on your assignments. You can get one-on-one help there from a TA or the lab instructor. This is the main way we will help you work through the course. The workshop note is shared with MATH 100, MATH 232 and MACM 201 students. The workshop opens in the second week. Hours will be posted on the door and WebCT. Lab Instructor: Dr. Jamie Mulholland, E-mail jtmulhol@math.sfu.ca Office: K10541. Cheating Policy. You are encouraged to work together on assignment problems. However, do not simply copy a fellow student's solutions. If a student shows you how to solve a problem, that's fine, but, make sure you understand it and then write out the solution yourself. Students caught copying another students work on an assignment will get zero for that assignment AND zero for all previous assignments. Students caught cheating on a midterm or the final examination will be get a grade of zero for that examination. All cases of cheating will be reported to the chair of the department.
